Melissa Johns – 2024 NWT Outstanding Volunteer

The Northwest Territory Métis Nation is proud to recognize and celebrate Melissa Johns, recipient of the 2024 NWT Outstanding Volunteer Award in the individual category. Melissa’s dedication to her community and tireless efforts to create opportunities for others make her truly deserving of this honor.

For nearly 11 years, Melissa has served as Division Manager/Treasurer/Registrar for the Fort Smith Minor Hockey Association, ensuring that children have access to hockey and the chance to participate in tournaments. Her leadership and commitment have played a vital role in fostering youth development and strengthening the community’s hockey programs.

In addition to her work in sport, Melissa is an elected Board Director for the Fort Smith Métis Council, where she advocates for and supports Métis citizens. She also serves as a board member for Sport North Federation, promoting diversity and inclusion in sport across the territory, and a board member for Fireweed Festival NT, helping to organize cultural and community events.

Melissa’s contributions extend even further—she was recently appointed as a Custom Adoptions Commissioner, a role that honors and upholds the importance of traditional adoption practices within Indigenous families. Her dedication to preserving Métis culture, supporting families, and strengthening the bonds of community is evident in all she does.

Whether she is organizing fundraisers, volunteering at events, or championing opportunities for youth and families, Melissa embodies the true spirit of volunteerism. The Northwest Territory Métis Nation congratulates her on this well-earned recognition and thanks her for her outstanding service to our people and community.
